SORALO’s path to impact

by SORALO / Wednesday, 24 July 2024 / Published in Stories

SORALOs vision and mission is guided by the belief that if the communities of the South Rift can own, manage and benefit from their natural resources while retaining their cultural values of coexistence, then they will be able to make decisions and take actions that will maintain a healthy and intact landscape for themselves and the wildlife they live with.  Over the last five years, guided by our strategic plan (2018-2023) SORALO has significantly grown in delivering on commitments to communities and within the organisation.

We wanted a clear roadmap to steer our growth and bring coherence to our initiatives—a prospect that excited our partners, providing them with clarity to better align their support and collaboration with us. It is reassuring that our supporters find comfort in the structured approach of our plans, contributing to their enthusiasm for our past efforts.

As we develop the new strategy, navigating feels smoother because we are building on familiar ground rather than starting from scratch.  Previously, uncertainties surrounded our processes and outcomes, but the guidance of our old strategy has inspired us to refine our approach and become increasingly responsive to community needs and emerging challenges.  Our upcoming strategy marks a significant improvement from its predecessor, aiming for even greater innovation, adaptability, and responsiveness to our communities and their evolving challenges.

What has changed since the last strategy, you may ask? The pace of change has increased rapidly. While familiar challenges such as land subdivision, human-wildlife conflict, and encroachment persist in our new strategy, the intensity of change has escalated.  What this means is that our window of opportunity to implement interventions is shrinking rapidly. To navigate this landscape, our interventions must be increasingly responsive and adaptive, to help us address and mitigate the challenges of our very dynamic environment.

As we start developing the new strategy, we are excited to welcome new team members whose diverse experiences from Kenya and beyond enrich our knowledge base. This positions us uniquely to refine our current strategy and craft a new one that meets community needs, protects the environment, and draws on both local and global insights. It’s an exciting phase in our journey towards sustainable impact and positive transformation.
